12-6-06 Bulletin: The (Nashville) Tennessean reported today that Vanderbilt University's Chemistry department has received the 2006 "Breakthrough Award for Innovation" from Popular Mechanics magazine for its discovery of a warm white light emitted by quantum dots when used in conjunction with blue LEDs (in essence, the quantum dots absorb the blue light emitted by the LEDs thus emitting warm white light. In short, this is an important step toward the possibility of LED lights replacing incandescents for general lighting.

I reported this story to you about a year ago--nice to see the Vandy team win (yet another) award for its discovery.
